The Power Of Humour!

Handshake and teamworkMaking a great impression with effective interview skills is more or less the key objective. People often ask though, “How can I get the interviewer to notice my personality more and not just what my resume says?” The simple answer: use the power of humour. Regardless of whether you are a uni/college graduate looking for a first graduate placement or a seasoned veteran in your field looking to make a career change; making a good impression should be the key objective.

Using humour builds association and commonality not to mention also assists in building congruent body language between the interviewer and candidate. When used effectively such interview techniques can also highlight your cutural alignment to the organisation considering your application.

Injecting humour into what is otherwise a serious situation can help ease the tension in the room and present a different side of you as a person, not just a potential employee. In answers to job interview questions, showing your ability to be somewhat casual helps interviewers to see you can handle stressful situations with people who are more or less strangers to you.

An important part of the interview process is building a connection between the interviewer and yourself. If you know a little bit about the interviewer or the company you are interviewing with, this will assist in creating such opportunities.

Laughter leads to relaxation both mentally and physically. The simple act of laughing can create a situation where the interviewer feels a kinship and their body will respond in kind. In this way, a bond has been made that has a physical ramification, which in turn highlights you and builds association.

Next time you attend an interview, try inserting some witty comments and notice the feeling it creates in the room. Along with other interview techniques, a little humour could lead to your next great job.
